This is usually electrical related and can happen just as often in new fans as older ones. If your ceiling fan has a control system with a receiver a defective receiver can create a humming noise. For example a grinding noise may be due to faulty noisy ceiling fan motor.
Replacing the switch with a compatible one usually solves the problem. Eventually your ceiling fan may start producing humming or rubbing noise. A hum in a ceiling fan is usually caused by the vibration of the motor and the volume of the noise depends on the mount housing and blades.
