Place mesh tape over the patch piece and spread joint compound.

Sand away high spots and ridges with 100 grit sandpaper. Or you can use a screwdriver or a utility knife. Install drywall screws and plaster washers around the perimeter of the loose area.
To repair large sags follow these steps. Step 2 condition the lath. Apply a second and third coat of the compound over repairs then sand until smooth.
