Exposed basement ceiling insulation. The exposed fiberglass insulation is fire code in most states. The older giant cast iron boiler was a huge thermal mass radiating heat into the basement space. When finishing a basement to create either additional living space for items such as a game room bar or spare bedroom it will often be necessary to install a new ceiling.

Start by using a broom or brush to clean the ceiling. Adding insulation cuts off this heat transfer. Overhead objects such as hvac duct work plumbing and electrical items can make this difficult.
It is also desirable and advisable to conceal and partially contain exposed insulation. Suggestions for covering exposed insulation include the following. There can be no paper on any insulation that is not covered with wall board in case of a fire.
Seal the insulation by stapling a polymembrane sheet over it. In addition to the insulation itself you may need to install a fire rated covering and or a vapor barrier. Still you should insulate the basement to seal off the air.
