42 Inch Cabinets 9 Foot Ceiling
Base cabinet 36 inches high 18 inches from counter top to bottom of 12 inch cabinet then 42 inch cabinet on top brings you to 9 ft.

When using 42 inch cabinets in an 8 foot ceiling there will be no room left for a crown molding. To make cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling we d need another 54 inches of cabinetry because 54 plus 54 equal 108. So this is how it would measure up.

Tell dh to trust you on this one. I would not leave space and clutter up the top of your cabs with stuff. Purchase a couple of kitchen magazines and you will see pages of tall cabs.
Instead you can use a small height crown molding and drop the cabinets 1 1 2 2 inches but you ll sacrifice the backsplash height. 0 foot ceilings are definitely the way to go. Cost wise this is turning out to be our of our budget to do ceiling height so we priced out 42 inch cabinets.
